The situation
Southard Salvage is a family-owned scrap metal yard in Rockaway, New Jersey. Most visitors are drivers on their phones who want three things: today’s prices, directions, and how drop-off works.
The owner needed to change prices himself without logging into anything complicated. WordPress was the wrong tool for that brief, and the site was already on Squarespace.
What I did
I kept the site on Squarespace and built every page as hand-written HTML, CSS and JavaScript inside it, with one shared stylesheet.
- Prices come from the owner’s Google Sheet through a small Apps Script feed. He edits a row and the site updates.
- Prices are cached in the browser for about ten minutes, with a fallback if the feed cannot be reached.
- Light and dark mode that follows the phone’s setting.
- Click-to-call and text-friendly phone buttons, plus a service area page for Rockaway and Morris County.
